Our Story

From limestone quarry to woodland retreat, this is our story...
1850
We start our story far back in the early days of the Forcett Limestone Company, around 1850. Forcett Quarry was entirely hand hewn from the rock by 200 men in about 20 years.
Fettlers, Delvers and Rock Hands… their legacy lives on in our cabin names.
After the limestone veins ran dry, the Company moved on after c.1870 to continue their work nearby. The quarry lay disused for another century or so, before the land was used for livestock holding for a time.

2010
From the early 2010s, the quarry began to see another industry hewn from its rock floor – firewood production and the UK import home of Finland’s finest wood fired hot tubs, Kirami.
The name Forcett Grange was adopted soon after, as the quarry was unnamed since its limestone days.
A seed of thought took hold around 2016 to create a retreat from the world cocooned by the hand hewn walls of limestone, under the gentle shade of the native trees…

2019
That seed became reality in late 2019; with the arrival of the first cabins the vision of the glamping site started to come to life.
Building began in August of that year, but was dampened by heavy rainfall shortly after the first cabins were placed.

2020
March was set as the opening date, which came and went with no other word to mention than Covid.
July finally saw the first guests check into the cabins at The Quarry – six cabins set beneath the swaying trees overlooking the hand hewn limestone walls.

2021
The following spring, another six cabins opened in The Foxwood, taking its name from the old Fox Covert Wood that used to surround the site.

2023
Further evolution of the facilities included The Sauna, opened in Summer 2023 in a serene treetop setting with magnificent views over the North Yorkshire countryside.
The Reception building (affectionately named The Wendy House) was also completed around this time, providing the site with a base for operations and a never ending stream of laundry!

What our guests are saying about us
We loved our stay here, the pod was really clean and the hot tub was great. This is a perfect little retreat for anyone looking for a nice quiet stay away!
Jean – December 2024
Just heading home after a fabulous 3 night break at Hewn. Super cosy cabin, in a beautiful location. Highlight was the private wood fired hot tub which we made good use of, even briefly in the pouring wind & rain! Wonderful relaxing and chilled break, would highly recommend and will be back.
Frances – January 2025
Such a relaxing few nights away with our little dog. Beautiful walks, quiet & stunning surroundings. Loved the sauna feature too, felt like a little paradise hideaway. The bed was so comfy too. Well needed & we can’t wait to re-book!
Sarah – January 2025
Not at all like glamping, more like luxury self catering in the wild! Great self contained cabins with plenty of facilities and home comforts each with its own wood fired hot tub. The cabins were very well maintained and spotless.
